A referral code can look like an inexpensive route to jewellery sales: reward a happy customer, let an ambassador introduce the product and pay only when an order arrives. The commercial reality is more demanding. Discounts, commission, gifting, software, returns and duplicate attribution can turn an apparently efficient programme into an expensive way of rewarding orders that would have happened anyway. This guide shows how to choose the right model, calculate what a referred customer can cost, protect trust and test the idea without surrendering the margin.

A recommendation earns trust because it feels personal. The programme should reward that trust without buying the same order twice or turning every relationship into a discount.

01

Choose the jewellery recommendation model before choosing an app

Customer referrals, affiliates, ambassadors, creators and loyalty schemes are often treated as the same activity because they can all use a code or link. They solve different problems. A customer referral programme asks an existing customer to introduce someone they know. An affiliate programme pays a publisher or creator for measurable sales. An ambassador relationship is usually longer and may include content, community or events. Loyalty activity rewards the customer's own repeat behaviour.

Start with the behaviour the business needs. If customers already recommend pieces privately, a simple customer-code test may make that behaviour easier to recognise. If shoppers repeatedly discover the range through stylists, gift guides or niche creators, an affiliate arrangement may formalise a useful route. If repeat sales are the priority, improving post-purchase communication may be more direct than creating a public ambassador scheme.

Do not install software and then invent a reason for it. State who should recommend the jewellery, to whom, at what moment and why the introduction is credible. The answer determines the reward, message, tracking and legal checks.

02

Calculate what a referred jewellery customer can cost

A programme is not cheap merely because payment follows a sale. Begin with net sales after the referred customer's discount and expected refunds. Deduct product cost, packaging, fulfilment, payment fees, delivery support, returns allowance and any other variable cost. The result is contribution before the referral reward. Then decide how much contribution the order must retain for overhead and profit.

Suppose a referred order would normally be £85, but the new customer receives £10 off. Net sales are £75. Variable product and fulfilment costs are £39, leaving £36 before the referrer's reward, software and administration. If the business needs to retain £22, no more than £14 remains for the reward and every other programme cost. A promised £10 customer credit leaves only £4 for technology, fraud, service and measurement.

This calculation should use the actual product mix. A percentage commission that works for a high-contribution necklace may lose money on a low-contribution gift set or discounted product. Keep exclusions visible and commercially defensible rather than hiding them in dense terms.

03

Design a customer referral programme around a real moment of delight

The best request arrives after the customer has evidence worth sharing: the piece arrived beautifully, the fit was right, a gift was well received or customer service solved a problem. Asking at checkout is premature. The customer has completed a transaction, not experienced the product.

Map likely recommendation moments by category. A gift buyer may want to share after the occasion. A customer choosing a personalised piece may share when they see the finished result. A repeat customer may be comfortable recommending the brand after several reliable orders. Triggering every person at the same number of days ignores those differences.

Keep the mechanism understandable. Explain who qualifies as a new customer, the minimum order if there is one, when the reward becomes valid and what happens after a return. A customer should not need to chase support to discover whether the introduction counted.

  • Ask after delivery and enough time to experience the piece.
  • Use different timing for gifts, personalisation and ready-to-dispatch orders.
  • Give the referrer a simple code or account page.
  • Confirm the reward only after the return or cancellation window you set.
  • Explain exclusions before the customer shares the offer.
  • Make support responsible for resolving disputed referrals consistently.

Do not turn ‘refer a friend’ into unlawful unsolicited marketing

UK electronic-marketing rules matter when the business encourages someone to send marketing by email, text or direct message. The Information Commissioner's Office says a business that instigates refer-a-friend electronic messages must comply with PECR, even when no incentive is offered. It also warns that the soft opt-in cannot be relied on for this activity and that obtaining valid consent from the friend is unlikely in practice.

Avoid forms that ask a customer to enter another person's email address so the business can send the invitation. Avoid pre-written marketing emails or messages that the scheme actively tells customers to forward. The ICO gives a different example in which the customer sees their unique code but the business does not tell them how to share it; the customer independently decides whether and how to mention the scheme.

This is an operational design issue, not a paragraph to add after launch. Get appropriate advice for the planned flow. Keep the brand's own marketing subscription separate: a referred visitor should choose whether to subscribe rather than being added because somebody introduced them.

05

Set jewellery affiliate commission from contribution—not convention

An affiliate commission should be the output of the economics, not a percentage copied from another brand. Decide whether commission is calculated on product revenue before or after discounts, whether VAT and delivery are excluded, and what happens to returns, exchanges, partial refunds and cancelled orders.

For example, a £95 net order might contribute £48 before affiliate costs. If the business must retain £25 and allows £5 for tracking, content support and return uncertainty, the maximum commission is £18. That is 18.9% of net sales in this illustration. A safer launch rate would normally leave headroom rather than spending the absolute maximum.

Model the commission across the lowest-contribution products that remain eligible, not only the account average. Consider a fixed reward, product-specific rates or a lower base rate with a measured volume tier. The programme should encourage profitable product mix rather than direct partners towards whichever item creates the largest nominal commission.

Make jewellery affiliate and ambassador content obviously advertising

A commission, free product, discount, payment or other incentive can create a commercial relationship that needs clear disclosure. The ASA and CAP published the fourth edition of their influencer guide on 23 October 2026. It covers affiliate marketing and says disclosure should make advertising recognisable. The CMA advises brands to check creator content and work promptly to correct inadequate labelling.

Do not rely on the audience understanding a personalised code. ASA guidance says consumers may not recognise a discount code as evidence of advertising, while labels such as ‘affiliate’, ‘aff’ or ‘collab’ may be insufficient. ‘Ad’ or ‘Advert’ used clearly and upfront is the safer practical standard in the cited guidance.

Put disclosure requirements in the partner terms and onboarding examples. Check posts, stories, videos, captions, link pages, gift guides and emails. A disclosure hidden after ‘more’, placed at the end or visually obscured does not give the customer clarity before engagement.

  • State which relationships and incentives require disclosure.
  • Show examples for each platform and content format.
  • Require an upfront, prominent label that customers understand.
  • Make product claims subject to the brand's verified information.
  • Check live content and retain evidence of corrections.
  • Pause partners who repeatedly ignore the requirements.

07

Keep incentivised referrals separate from customer reviews

A recommendation programme and a review programme may involve the same customer, but they should not blur into one another. A reward for introducing a purchaser must not become a reward for leaving a positive review. Customers should be free to describe an ordinary, mixed or disappointing experience.

UK consumer-protection rules changed in April 2025 to add a banned practice concerning fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews. The CMA says reviews and endorsements must be genuine and accurate and that an incentive must not be hidden. If any review is invited alongside a referral reward, disclose the incentive and use a process that does not condition it on sentiment.

Operationally, keep the requests, templates and reporting separate. Measure referred customers as acquisition; measure reviews as customer evidence. Do not count a creator's paid endorsement as an independent customer review on the product page.

08

Choose a jewellery referral reward that does not train discount dependence

Money off is easy to explain, but it is not the only reward. Early collection access, priority personalisation slots, complimentary service, event access, store credit or a relevant add-on may feel valuable while protecting more contribution. The reward must still have a cost, fulfilment process and clear terms.

A two-sided discount can accelerate response because both people benefit, but it also creates two costs: reduced sales value for the new order and a reward for the referrer. A one-sided thank-you may be commercially cleaner. Test the smallest useful incentive rather than assuming generosity creates better customers.

Consider brand fit and purchase frequency. Store credit is weak if customers naturally buy once every several years or if it expires before a realistic repeat occasion. A gift should be genuinely desirable and not become unwanted stock added to every parcel. Access works only when the collection or service feels worth accessing.

09

Write referral terms around the orders the jewellery business can support

Terms should answer the questions that otherwise become support disputes. State who can participate, which countries and currencies are included, what counts as a new customer, the eligible products, minimum spend, usage limit, reward approval time, expiry and treatment of returns. Explain whether rewards or codes combine with sale prices, gift cards, creator offers or other promotions.

Shopify lets merchants control customer and market eligibility, usage limits and discount combinations. Its current rules allow merchants to choose which discount classes can combine; customers can use up to five product or order discount codes and one shipping discount code on an eligible order. That technical ability is not a reason to allow every combination. Model the worst permitted basket first.

Protect customers from surprises. A shareable link can place a code into the cart, but another promotion may be stronger or incompatible. Show the applied discount clearly and make the error message useful. Test mobile checkout, accelerated-payment routes and every live combination before inviting partners.

  • New-customer definition and household rules
  • Qualifying order value and excluded products
  • Markets, currencies and delivery destinations
  • Code and reward combination rules
  • Validation period for returns and cancellations
  • Reward form, expiry and redemption limits
  • Self-referral, resale and abuse restrictions
  • Right to correct errors, suspend misuse and close the programme

Track jewellery referrals with both links and codes

A code is memorable and can work after a customer moves between devices. A tracked link records the click and can carry campaign details even when the shopper forgets the code. Use both where the platform supports them, then decide which signal wins if they point to different partners.

Google recommends using the relevant UTM parameters together, including source, medium, campaign, ID and source platform where appropriate. Create a naming system before issuing links. For example, use a consistent medium such as affiliate, a stable partner ID and a campaign name for the collection or period. Do not let every partner invent a spelling that fragments the report.

Shopify marketing reports can group data by UTM source, medium and campaign, while discount reports show code use. Neither proves incrementality. Combine the referral record with customer status, net sales, discount, refund, contribution and any other channel that touched the order.

Review consent before adding affiliate tracking technology

Referral and affiliate apps may use cookies, local storage, pixels or other identifiers to remember a click. The ICO's current guidance explicitly uses an affiliate platform as an example of technology that can store or access information on a user's device. PECR applies to storage and access technologies, and advertising tracking is not automatically exempt.

Map what the proposed app sets, when it is set, the purpose, duration, data recipients and whether it works before consent. Update the cookie information and consent tool where required. Do not assume that installing an app through an ecommerce platform makes the website's implementation compliant.

Consent choices can reduce trackable conversions. Build a fair fallback process for a customer who has a valid code or a documented introduction, and state the evidence required. Privacy-respecting measurement is a design constraint to manage, not a reason to overwrite the visitor's choice.

12

Prevent code leakage, self-referrals and duplicate jewellery commission

Public codes can move from a creator's post to voucher websites, browser extensions, private groups and checkout searches. The code may then claim a customer who had already decided to buy. A last-click app can overwrite the partner who introduced the brand, while several platforms may each claim the same order.

Set rules before the first dispute. Decide the attribution window, the position of codes versus tracked links, whether branded-search or voucher traffic qualifies, how existing customers are treated and which order status releases payment. Hold rewards until likely cancellations and returns have matured.

Monitor repeated addresses, payment methods, devices, unusually high code use, identical customer and referrer details and sudden changes in conversion rate. Review rather than automatically accusing. Families share addresses and gifting creates legitimate patterns, but unexplained concentration deserves a check.

  • One person repeatedly referring the same household
  • Referrer and customer identities or payment details matching
  • A code appearing on an unapproved voucher site
  • Orders placed immediately after a code search at checkout
  • Conversion rates far outside the partner's traffic quality
  • High cancellations, returns or customer-service problems
  • Commission claimed by more than one source
  • Partners bidding on restricted brand terms where terms prohibit it

13

Recruit jewellery partners for audience fit—not follower count

A smaller creator, stylist, newsletter or community can outperform a large account when the audience trusts their judgement and matches the buying context. Review the content, comments, geography, price expectations, previous partnerships and how naturally jewellery appears in their work. A large following outside the delivery market is not a useful acquisition channel.

Ask for relevant performance evidence, but expect definitions to vary. Link clicks, story views and attributed sales need dates and context. Read the audience rather than only the totals. Does the partner help people choose gifts, build outfits, mark life events or discover independent businesses? That role may be more useful than generic reach.

Start with a small, clear group. Give each partner an agreement, verified product information, disclosure rules, assets, contact route, prohibited claims and payment schedule. A programme with 100 inactive codes is not stronger than five relationships that teach the business something.

14

Give jewellery partners accurate material—not scripted enthusiasm

Partners need enough information to describe the piece correctly: product names, materials, dimensions, fit, fastening, care, packaging, dispatch, returns, available markets and current prices. Include approved image assets and explain where a claim requires exact wording. Do not ask a creator to invent expertise or repeat a personal experience they did not have.

Offer story angles rather than a compulsory glowing caption. A stylist may explain proportion and layering. A gift editor may compare recipient or price options. A customer may describe why they chose a piece. The commercial relationship should be disclosed, but the content can still be useful and recognisable as the partner's work.

Keep landing pages aligned. If a partner introduces a particular bracelet, the link should lead to that bracelet or a tightly relevant edit, not the homepage. Preserve the product, price, colour, promise and delivery information that earned the click.

  • Current product facts and eligible variants
  • Accurate price, availability and dispatch information

15

Measure referred jewellery customers through to retained contribution

Orders and gross referral revenue are not enough. Report eligible clicks, sessions, new customers, conversion rate, net sales, average order value, discounts, rewards, commission, software, returns and contribution after programme costs. Compare the referred cohort with other new customers at the same stage of maturity.

Look for incremental behaviour. If codes are mostly used by existing customers who would have purchased through email, the programme may be redistributing credit. If referred customers buy at full price later, leave stronger reviews or introduce other customers, the first-order result may understate value. Use observed cohorts rather than assuming lifetime value.

Review partner concentration and operational cost. One productive relationship may justify tailored support; dozens of low-volume partners can create a high administration cost per sale. Record team time as a real programme input.

Run a 30-day jewellery referral pilot before opening the doors

In week one, define the customer and programme job. Calculate maximum referral cost by eligible product family, choose the reward and write the qualification rules. Map the proposed email, message and tracking flow against privacy and marketing requirements.

In week two, configure unique links and codes, discount combinations, consent behaviour, landing pages and reports. Place test orders on mobile and desktop, then test returns, cancellations, expired codes, existing customers and ineligible baskets. Confirm exactly when a reward becomes payable.

In week three, invite a small group with a genuine reason to participate: proven customers or a few audience-aligned partners. Provide the terms, disclosure examples and product kit. Do not announce a permanent scheme before the support team has handled real questions.

In week four, let the earliest outcomes mature. Review new-customer quality, contribution, code leakage, support time and partner behaviour. Continue, revise or stop against criteria written before launch. A pilot can succeed by proving the model should not scale.

  • Days 1–4: calculate maximum cost and choose eligible products.
  • Days 5–7: document terms, disclosures and consent responsibilities.
  • Days 8–12: configure links, codes, combinations and reporting.
  • Days 13–15: test purchase, return and reward journeys.
  • Days 16–22: invite a small, relevant participant group.
  • Days 23–30: review mature orders and decide the next test.

Know when a jewellery referral programme is the wrong next step

Do not launch because sales are slow and referral software promises growth. If customers are not delighted, product pages do not answer basic questions, margins are unknown, tracking is unreliable or fulfilment is inconsistent, a programme sends more people into an unresolved problem.

Referral works best when there is something specific and trustworthy to recommend. First repair the customer experience, product value and post-purchase relationship. Then test whether an introduction can acquire a genuinely new customer at a cost the business can retain.

The goal is not the largest ambassador list or the greatest number of codes. It is a controlled system in which the customer understands the commercial relationship, the partner can speak accurately, the order remains profitable and the brand can explain why that sale deserves a reward.
